President Jakaya Kikwete, who
spoke during the recent USAID Frontiers in Development Conference,
indicated that the government will focus on developing an industrial
economy with a concentration on the growth of the Tanzania industrial
sector and natural gas in order to meet the goals outlined in the second
five year plan of the Development Vision 2025 (2016/17-2020/21) and
further promote socio and economic development in the country.
President
Kikwete explained during the recent USAID conference that the second
five year plan will focus on transforming the country into a competitive
semi-industrialized economy with an objective of creating new
opportunities for job growth.
“Tanzania will then be a country
characterized by high quality livelihoods,” he said, “and a competitive
semi-industrialized economy capable of producing growth and shared
benefits.”
The Tanzania Development Vision 2025
was first adopted in 2000 with the goal of transforming the country into
a strong and competitive middle income economy by 2025.
During the first five year plan,
President Kikwete indicated that the government worked to address
infrastructure needs within the country’s energy and transport sectors,
improved productivity in the agriculture sector, increased the number of
skilled laborers, and enhanced the business environment within the
