Ophir Energy has announced a
new Tanzania gas discovery in its Block 4 Kamba-1 well, indicating
discoveries of 1.03 trillion CF in the Kamba and Fulusi prospects and an
increase in the capacity of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) train.
According
to reports, the reservoir sands are of better quality than had been
projected prior to drilling and additional analysis is expected show
that the volumes discovered are also greater than previously
anticipated.
The Block 4 license is currently operated by the BG Group with Ophir holding a 20% interest in the block.
The BG Group is currently planning to
construct a build a plant in Tanzania that will export LNG to Asia
following a government assessment of where the plant should ultimately
be located.
In a statement released by Ophir
Energy, the company’s CEO, Nick Cooper, indicated that the recent
discovery shows enough gas in the block to justify an additional 5
million ton-per-annum LNG plant to support the project.
The Kamba-1 discovery represents the
16th consecutive discovery and the final well in the current drilling
campaign by joint venture of Ophir and BG Group. |
