In Summary
- It has now scaled up its operations with the government's recent contract signing with US firm Tetra Tech, paving way for the construction of phase one of the project which requires a confirmed CEO.
The government has started the search for Konza
Technopolis Development Authority (KOTDA) CEO, a year since the
authority that is mandated to spearhead the development of Kenya’s
planned premier city was formed.
KOTDA has been operating with an acting an CEO - Catherine
Adeya–Weya - since it was established. However it has now scaled up its
operations with the government's recent contract signing with US firm
Tetra Tech, paving way for the construction of phase one of the project
which requires a confirmed CEO.
John Ngumi, the chairman of KOTDA, said the move is
aimed at complying with recruitment processes of public officers as
laid down by the constitution.
“Konza is a public entity, the current acting CEO
has done very well and is still entitled to apply for the job. However,
we must follow the constitution which has opened the recruitment process
to all interested candidates ,” Mr Ngumi said in a telephone interview.
The Kenya Rural Urban Roads is expected to start
tarmacking the internal road network, put sewerage systems and fibre
optic cable ducts in the next two weeks. This follows the completion of
power installation at the site. The power will be used to pump water
from the boreholes to the Phase 1 parcels for initial infrastructural
development, construction of the verticals and greening of the city.
Upon completion of phase one, Konza is expected to
create 16,200 jobs. The technopolis is also expected to host various
amenities including ICT research centres, a university complex, offices,
residential houses and parks.
Additionally, it will also host foreign and local
Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) companies, a science park, a
convention centre, shopping malls, hotels, international schools and
health facilities.
The City will be developed under a public-private
partnership (PPP) model where the government will provide land and build
other infrastructure such as road, railway, water, telecoms and
sewerage systems and provide security.
