In Summary
  • Opportunity knocks all the time, but you should be ready to seize the golden chance.

Ali Mrabu Mzee, alias Major, is a matatu tout. He is also my guy. I will tell you why.

President Uhuru Kenyatta was on his way to the Moi International Airport from State House Mombasa two Saturdays ago.
He stopped at Changamwe to address a crowd that had gathered by the roadside. As usual, he was flanked by the mean-looking VIP Recce Company. But Ali Arabu Mzee took his chance and stepped forward.
“I felt numb at first but just trudged ahead. And I was standing next to Kenya’s most powerful and heavily guarded man,” he said. He ended up having a one-to-one conversation with the President.
The incident reminded me of one of the most important lessons that I learned in business school. You cannot make any business decision based on perfect knowledge.
By the time that you have all the information that you need, someone else has already taken the risk and succeeded. Waiting for the “right time” actually causes you to lose the opportunity that you are seeking!
Would you have missed the chance that Mzee had?
Everyone has a chance for success. But unfortunately, people often handle life as they do bad weather. They while away the time waiting for it to end. Yet the tide of opportunity comes to everyone.
Opportunity knocks all the time, but you’ve got to be ready for it. When your chance comes, you must take advantage of it. Even the good book says that the race is not to the swift nor the battle to the strong, for time and chance happen to everyone. When you are prepared for opportunity, your chance for success is sure to come.
Each of us carries a mental blueprint of ourselves and our future programmed deep into our minds. When you can bring these visions of your future self to the surface and focus in on whom, what and how you would like to be, you will begin to “act” like that person therefore achieving all of your goals.
The power of visualisation is well documented in the book and video The Secret where people tell stories of success using positive visualisation to change their lives.
Visualisation helps you focus in on exactly what it is you want and keeps you motivated until you reach it. You want to start small and focus on real attributes and character traits that your future self would possess. You will slowly begin the transformation into your future self and create a positive, winning attitude along the way.
Research also shows that positive people are more successful than their pessimistic counterparts, and the reason is clear – people enjoy being around positive people.
It’s often difficult to grow into your greatest self, but it’s a tragedy to let the lie of fear stop you. So realise right now that fear doesn’t exist anywhere except in your head. Be courageous. Go after your goals.
Never let your fear steer your present or decide your future. And remember, courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is far more important than fear.
