NHIF challenged to provide free medical check-ups in rural areas

Godfrey Zambi, Food, Agriculture, and Cooperatives Deputy Minister
Food, Agriculture, and Cooperatives Deputy Minister, Godfrey Zambi has challenged the National Health Insurance Funds (NHIF) to conduct free medical check-ups countrywide particularly in rural areas to help Tanzanians know their health status so as to improve production and the country’s economy.

Speaking at the ongoing ‘Nanenane’ agricultural exhibitions at Ngongo village in Lindi region on Monday, Zambi said NHIF should help Tanzanians in rural areas know their health status so they can participate fully in agricultural production.

“Your plan of expanding to rural areas will be a better opportunity for rural dwellers to get an opportunity to understand their health status,” he said.

The deputy minister further said providing free of charge health check-ups would help improve production in agriculture, fisheries and industries.

"I must congratulate NHIF for their work, because prevention is better than cure, once people know their health status and get proper treatment they are likely to stay healthy and actively participate in production and push forward the country’s development,” said Zambi.

Meanwhile, NHIF Marketing and Research Director, Rafael Mwamoto said they are determined to improve health services throughout the country. He said currently, NHIF provides services countrywide and also have branches in some rural areas.

He said NHIF will ensure that all Tanzanians have medical insurance to enable them access proper medical services whenever they fall ill, “I would like to appeal to all Tanzanians to join NHIF because it is a safe and easy way to get medical treatment.”
