MPs go on recess after passing 16 laws

MPs Thursday took a one-and-a-half-month break after passing 16 Bills in the four months the House has been in session.

The legislators said it was time to take a rest after doing a “good job” for the country in approving the legislation.

Majority Leader Aden Duale moved the Adjournment Motion after members adopted the Finance Bill.

The draft law had, however, elicited divergent views after an amendment to make it mandatory for Central Organisation of Trade Unions and Federation of Kenya Employers representatives to attend National Social Security Fund board meetings.

The MPs may be recalled to adopt or reject the ambassadorial nominees sent to the House by the President. The Defence Committee will vet the candidates next week, then present its report to the House when it is reconvened.

“The recess gives us an opportunity to reflect on the challenges facing our country, especially insecurity and the referendum debate,” said Mr Duale.

The Division of Revenue Bill, the County Allocation of Revenue Bill, the Appropriations Bill and the Finance Bill are among the key laws the House passed.

Minority Leader Francis Nyenze asked the lawmakers to support the referendum being pushed by Cord, saying the Constitution was 80 per cent good and 20 per cent bad.

He called on the House to come up with a law to improve the welfare of former MPs.
