Kisumu is the latest county to acquire iPads for its members of the assembly in a bid to cut the costs of stationery.
Some Sh3 million was spent on 50 iPads last week, a month after Nairobi, Kisii and Meru purchased the gadgets for their MCAs.
Samuel
Ong’ow, the Majority Leader in the Assembly, said the decision to
purchase the gadgets was informed by a need to reduce the county's
budget on paper.
ACCESS ORDER PAPERS
“It
is unfortunate that in this day and age, this Assembly still transacts
business using heaps of paper that is not only environmentally
unfriendly but also costly,” said Mr Ong’ow.
Assembly
Budget and Appropriation Committee chairman Michael Ogada said members
would be able to access Order papers, Bills, motions, reports from
committees among others through the iPads.
Meru Speaker Joseph Kaberia said their move was geared towards improving efficiency and openness of the Assembly business.
Kisii Speaker Kerosi Ondieki said the Assembly was in the process of going digital.
