The Nairobi County Assembly will spend
nearly Sh8 million to buy iPads for its 127 members in a bid to cut the
cost of paper and reduce its carbon footprint, the budget team has said.
In
its recommendations, the budget and appropriations committee said that
paper was environmentally unfriendly, adding that the county needs to go
digital.
“It is based on the need to align itself to
the national government trademark of digitalising government operations
that the assembly budget has set aside funds to purchase iPads for
members, which will aim to address conclusively problems associated
with paper work,” said committee chairman Michael Ogada.
The ward representatives will now access the Hansard,
Order Paper, Bills, motions, committee reports and statements through
the gadgets. An iPad costs about Sh60,000, which will see City Hall pay
Sh7.8 million for the gadgets.
