MPs want Costech to study aloe vera plant

Some members of parliament have asked the government to have the Commission for Science and Technology (Costech) conduct research on the aloe vera plant which is nowadays widely used by a cross section of people.

Speaking in the National Assembly yesterday during the questions and answers session, Waride Bakari Jabu (Special Seats, CCM) asked the government to explain its stand on the uses of the plant.

She said it should conduct a research on the plant as so far nothing has been done, yet aloe vera plays a crucial role in earning some people income.

In response, deputy minister of Health and Social Welfare, Dr Steven Kebwe said the government will look in the possibility of assigning the commission to conduct such research.

He conceded that there was no scientific research which has been done on the use of the plant worldwide, but it has been in use for the past 2000 years.

“I can assure you that using the plant is safe in making cosmetics as it has been registered by the Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority (TFDA),” he said.

He said the authority has approved cosmetic products that contain aloe vera ingredients. The 70 registered cosmetics include soaps, dental, body, hair and face oil.

Meanwhile, Mji Mkongwe legislator, Ibrahim Sanya (CUF) wanted the government to explain measures taken to curb illegal importation of aloe vera products.

“Tanzania has been witnessing importation of aloe vera products, what measures have you taken to avoid harmful ones?” he asked.

In his response the deputy minister said the government has already tasked inspection officers at all border points including airports to keep an open eye, adding: “We have officials at border points who are to ensure that nothing enters the country without thorough inspection.”
