The government should provide equal opportunities for both foreign and local investors to enable and encourage a win-win situation, IPP Executive Chairman said yesterday.

Dr Reginald Mengi advised the government to find an alternative to providing equal opportunity for investment, noting that unemployment has become a big problem in the country.

Speaking during the handover ceremony of tweet winners held in Dar es Salaam yesterday, the IPP Chairman said:  “However, unemployment should not be focused only on employment perspective but on entrepreneurship for people to improve their living standard.”

He said there are many investment opportunities, especially natural resources, but the problem is local people are not involved, which is something very crucial for them.

“Many people think capital is money only, but the truth is that money alone is not capital, sometimes it needs creativity and education,” Dr Mengi added.

On his part, Dr Donath Olomi, Institute of Management and Entrepreneurship Development Executive Officer, said May winners were found after they gave good ideas on:

‘Describe how you used or how you will use an idea you presented or given by another in tweet competition to buildup you economically.’
A total of 1,542 citizens’ tweets were received and three emerged winners.

“Twenty-one participants said they execute their ideas or what was given by others to establish about 35 projects,” Dr Olomi added.

Baraka Luwanja, Njombe Region-based teacher, who banked the first place win affirmed that his education helped him start a wind vane that enabled him to get underground water, much of which he  now sells to Njombe people.

The first runner up, Deo Polycarp from Babati, said from the tweet competition he innovated incubator for chicks which he sells to earn revenue.

The second runner up, Fred Fabian from Iringa stressed improvement of local investment. He emerged with an idea to establish a project for squeezing sunflower seeds he bought from the local farmers, into oil.

In awarding the Tweet Champions, the first winner pocketed Sh1 million, the second winner netted Sh500,000 while the third winner banked Sh300,000 financing.

Three other tweet competitors were awarded Sh100,000 each for effective participation from when the completion started in May, 2013 to May 2014.

They are Chande Kibome from Morogoro, Goodluck Msongore, a student from St Joseph’s University, and Aika Swai.
Meanwhile, Dr Mengi said he supported all members of Parliament fighting for investment policy because investment will contribute to increasing national income.

“That will increase and create more employment opportunities for local people, and as a result it will improve their living standards and economic situation as well.”

The IPP Executive Chairman is behind the establishment of the tweet competition in May, 2013 aimed at helping people in communities to come up with ideas to foster them economically.

Some 36 participants emerged winners in the competition and their ideas compiled in a book, which will enable other people in society to use them for economic advancement.
