Oil, gas sector not standards-compliant: study

Morogoro. Studies conducted on nine oil and gas exploration companies operating in Tanzania show that there is a general lack of compliance to international standards on preparation of corporate social responsibility (CSR) policies. Best practices show that communities must be involved, a consultant has said. Presenting findings of a study to civil society organisations (CSOs) that focus on petroleum companies’ compliance in Tanzania, Mr Lusako Raphael, who is from Tansheq Limited, said the study shows a lack of evidence of involvement of communities in the preparation of the policies and action plans.


Mr Lusako said in the study commissioned by the Oil for Development Project (OfD) being implemented by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Tanzania said that there are clear indications that implementation of those policies was questionable. He told participants to the meeting organised by the WWF for its partner CSOs and government officials that non-involvement of communities in the preparation of the policies was not conforming to international standards. He said international standards identify six core pillars which the CSR policies must follow, which include community involvement through such organisations as CSOs.
