KRA maintains new iTax system works despite logjam reports

The Kenya Revenue Authority has dismissed claims that the attempt to computerise tax collection suffered a major setback.


On Monday, KRA Commissioner General John Njiraini said reports that the system has been jammed for the last one month are inaccurate.

"The allegation that iTax has never worked is false and fallacious. On the contrary, many taxpayers are already using the system with 93 per cent of Large Taxpayers and 63 per cent of Medium Taxpayers already enjoying iTax services," he said in a statement.

The Commissioner General said the crisis arose because of an ill-timed decision to migrate all taxpayers to the iTax platform on March 1 which resulted in people rushing to upload their data.
On the allegations touching on the conduct of a senior KRA staff member, the Commissioner General said they are addressing the issue and the authority welcomes investigations by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.

The authority also dismissed claims that a tender was awarded to TATA Consulting Services for iTax maintenance.

iTax was to replace another online system called Integrated Tax Management System (ITMS) previously used by KRA, which the public had complained about due to its inefficiencies.
The web-enabled system sought to make tax compliance simple, quick and secure.
