Dar es Salaam. A shop owned by Mr Zacharia Peter along Msimbazi Street at Kariakoo area in the city was robbed at gunpoint on Saturday afternoon.
Little did Mr Peter know that the busy day would end with such a shocking episode of gunshots, blood and deaths. Mr Peter told The Citizen yesterday that, a group of six people, including a woman, on three motorcycles invaded his shop and injured his shopkeeper who is his nephew and killed two innocent people who were just passing by.
The fifteen-minute raid that happened in the middle of the busy metropolis left the area dead silent within minutes, according to eye witness Reuben Chacha.
He said residents heard the sound of a gun and started gathering at the scene to see what was happening, but the robbers ordered them to scatter, adding they all obeyed and left to save their lives after recognising it was a robbery incident. Mr Peter told this paper that the robbers arrived at his shop disguised as customers at around 4pm, but what surprised him was that they all pulled guns from their waists and started spraying bullets aimlessly.
“I have three shops and at that time I was in my bigger shop which is just opposite the one they entered. I watched them from there; they were six and one was a woman,” he said, adding: “Three of them alighted from their motorcycles, and two entered the shop while the other four remained on the road spraying bullets around and ordered other shop owners to close their shops,” he recalled. He added that after realising that they were robbers, he knelt down in his shop watching them as they kept forcing his shopkeeper to give them the money which they claimed was collected from the bank the same day.
The burglars may have acted on a tip because as they claimed, Mr Peter had just arrived from the bank minutes before the attack, but did not withdraw any cash, thanks to a long queue on the day. “After a long argument with the shopkeeper, one of them shot him in the knee but he told them he had no knowledge of the said money,” he said
