A group supporting Ababu Namwamba for the ODM’s secretary
position in the elections to be held on Friday has demanded the election
area be cleared of any party members who are not delegates.
Speaking
at a Nairobi hotel on Thursday evening, they said this will ensure that
the elections in Kasarani Stadium are free and fair.
Coastal
group spokesperson Thomas Mwadeghu said that they had received reliable
information that there are persons who had been transported late in the
evening to the voting venue with a view to disrupt the event.
He said they will protest any action intended to compromise the elections.
“We
have been informed that there are persons who have been transported to
the venue but they are not delegates. We wish to state that this is not
acceptable and we demand that the hall should be cleared and only
genuine delegates be allowed to enter the hall,” said Mr Mwadeghu.
He
proposed that those who are not delegates should be allocated a
separate place to sit as they observe the elections but not to be
allowed into the election hall.
The group also said
that the time allocated for the elections was too short and may
compromise the outcome. Mr Mwadeghu said that starting the elections at
4pm and ending at 6pm was not adequate to ensure acceptable results are
obtained adding that it may give room for mischief.
“It
is too late to start elections at 4pm because the permit does not allow
us to continue past 6pm. We will therefore be having only two hours and
this is not sufficient for a national elections being held by a
national party like ODM and we need to start say around 1pm,” added Mr
Mwadegu.
They were speaking at a Nairobi hotel on
Thursday evening during a meeting called by the Ababu led camp to
strategise on their plans for the day.
