More than 34 people, mostly women and children, have been killed in a surprise rebel attack on Kolnyang Payam to the east of Jonglei State capital Bor, police and government officials said on Friday.

Former vice-president Dr Riek Machar’s rebel forces stormed the village on Wednesday evening, chasing out women and children who had just returned from the bushes since they fled fighting in mid-December, Bor County Commissioner Dr Agoot Alier said.

“They just shot indiscriminately at the people. We have found 34 bodies of these people and the toll may be higher,” Dr Agoot said.

“When the civilians returned [after the government took control of Bor], they thought they would be safe in the villages,” he said.
