The race for the chairmanship of
opposition party, ODM, continued to attract more candidates with Tigania
East MP Mpuru Aburi declaring his interest in the position.
Mr
Aburi will challenge former Speaker Kenneth Marende for the position.
However, Mr Marende is yet to publicly declare his intention.
Yesterday, Mr Aburi handed in his application to the party’s executive director Magerer Lang’at at Orange House in Nairobi.
Mr
Lang’at said: “ We are prepared to receive the nomination papers from
tomorrow(today). So far, only Mr Aburi has fully satisfied the
requirements to vie for chairmanship.”
The MP said he had decided to vie for the top seat to redeem the party from being seen as a regional party.
“
Enemies of the party are making it look like ODM belongs to west of
Kenya. We in the east are ready to lead the party,” he said at Orange
House.
Mr Aburi is seen as an ardent political ally of
party leader Raila Odinga. The MP is one of the only two elected on the
party’s ticket in eastern and Mt Kenya regions.
