Kenya plans to launch its bid for a temporary
slot in the powerful UN Security Council early this year, buoyed by the
election of its envoy to head the Unicef executive organ.
Kenya’s ambassador to New York, Macharia Kamau,
was picked as president of the executive board of the United Nations
Children Fund (Unicef) for a one-year term, replacing Jarmo Viinanen of
Finland.
Mr Kamau served as Vice President of the Unicef executive board over the last two years.
“During his tenure he achieved tremendous success
in many respects and he was able to oversee the implementation of key
projects which saw alleviation of the suffering of many children in the
continent of Africa, where most of his tour of duty was served,” the
Foreign Affairs ministry said in a statement.
He will be assisted in his new role by four
deputies from Bulgaria, Denmark, Haiti and Pakistan as well as 36 bureau
members including eight African country representatives from Central
Africa Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, the Gambia,
Ghana and Zambia.
The government said the election of Mr Kamau would
enhance its pursuit of key positions including a seat in the UN
Security Council.
“The key roles that Kenya continues to play have
strategically raised her profile both within UN circles and regional
groupings,’’ the ministry said
