The Nairobi county government has
received a boost after it signed a deal with German Industry and
Commerce stakeholders in Kenya that will see it get Sh28 billion to
manage the city’s waste and generate electricity.
During
the signing of the memorandum of understanding, Nairobi Governor Evans
Kidero said the waste-to-energy solutions will generate at least 70 mega
watts per hour of electricity to the national grid and address the
perennial blackout menace in the city.
Provide employment
“The
project shall provide employment of 1,000 inhabitants in the first
project and 250 employees directly on site in the second phase of the
project.
“We want to make sure that the city is clean and the Dandora dump site is cleaned,” said Dr Kidero.
Dr
Kidero said a modular plant by Sustainable Energy Management (SEM), a
German waste management company, is designed to take daily input of
approximately 1,000 tons of waste of all kinds generated by Nairobi
residents.
This project, he said, will make the city clean and get rid of the waste as well as create job opportunities for the youth
