President Uhuru Kenyatta returned home Wednesday morning from Johannesburg, South Africa where he attended the epic memorial service for former South African President Nelson Mandela.
The plane carrying the President and First Lady Margaret touched down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport shortly after 1:00 am and was received by Deputy President William Ruto.
President Kenyatta had joined over 90 leaders from across the world who braved a heavy downpour to pay their last respects to the late Mandela at the FNB stadium in Johannesburg.
Speakers at the service included South African President Jacob Zuma, US President Barack Obama, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, President Hifikepunye Pohamba of Namibia, India’s President Pranab Mukherjee and President Raúl Castro Ruz of Cuba.
President Zuma described the late Mandela late Mandela as a courageous leader who laid a firm foundation for the South African dream of a united, non-racial, non-sexist, democratic and prosperous country.
President Obama, on his part, said Mandela was practical and tested his beliefs against the hard surface of circumstance and history.

In his tribute, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said Mandela was a unique leader and one of the world’s greatest teachers.
Mandela’s remains will be laid to rest at his rural home in Qunu, Eastern Cape on December 15.
