Two Kenya companies have won Sh6.5 million ($75,000) for running green enterprises.
Continental Renewable Energy Company, which converts plastic waste into low-cost building materials, has won Sh4.32 million while organic fertiliser distributor Wanda Organic Company won Sh2.16 million from Growth Hub.

Growth Hub is an initiative that supports viable businesses pursuing environmental conservation financially, helping them to expand. Continental recycles plastic waste to make fencing posts and resin roof tiles while Wanda imports and distributes non-chemical fertilisers.

Wanda supplies Plantmate fertiliser which is produced from plant and animal wastes as well as Prime EC, an emulsion soil enricher. The two products are widely used in Southeast Asia, Indochina, China, and Australia.

Continental and Wanda will also be linked to mentors, specialists and potential investors from Kenya, US and Denmark for partnerships. The competition had 13 finalists.

“We gave the participants an open forum to nominate the best business idea amongst themselves. We wanted  to reward the best,’’ Growth Hub managing director Patricia Jumi said.
