World poor getting poorer-UNCTAD

United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)
Poverty levels for the world’s poorest countries have not declined due to the fact that the countries have failed to solve challenges that may address poverty reduction especially the creation of employment opportunities for young people.

United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) former Head of Research on Africa Prof Charles Gore made the announcement midweek in Dar es Salaam noting that governments of the poor countries need to come up with strategies that will open doors for investment in their various development sectors.

He was speaking at a public seminar on Economic Development and Generalised Poverty Reduction themed: ‘What are the Key Lessons from Past Experience’ and organised by Economic and Social Research Foundation (ESRF).

Prof Gore also said: “If the governments of the poorest countries will be achieving to design as many development projects as they can, they will employ more people hence the war against poverty will be achieved and will be the first step in reducing poverty for its citizens.

The Don advised the government to ensure that there is a rise of sustainable investment in economic projects and to also ensure that exported goods are value added and not otherwise.

He underscored that the goals and objectives of the world’s poorest countries must be focused on empowering themselves economically is to see their countries have sufficient food among other basic needs for its people.

“In order for the poorest countries to get rid of economic disparity, they must embrace new technology in all sectors…provide education on family planning especially for the people in rural areas,” he advised and reminded the poor countries of the world that the most important aspect to consider is to have balanced economic growth that meets the basic needs of the people.
