The Netherlands has given a Sh1.2 billion grant
to Lake Turkana Wind Power for the construction of a 200km road from
Laisamis to Sirima.
The road upgrade in the flood-prone
area, the location of the multi-billion shilling wind power project, is
expected to cost Sh2.6 billion in total. The LTWP will provide the
balance.
The company said that construction will be
done in partnership with the Kenya Rural Roads Authority and the Kenya
National Highways Authority. Already, the wind energy firm has been
given a nod by the government to commence work.
Construction
of the high level gravel road is set to begin early next year and is
expected to raise the profile of Marsabit County as the next investment
destination.
The region has for a long time suffered
from poor road network which has hampered economic development and
growth. The project is the first large-scale wind energy production
initiative on the content and is expected to generate 300 megawatts of
power once complete.
The energy company will deploy 365 wind turbines with the capacity to produce 33 kilo volts of electricity each.
Kenya has in recent years invested heavily in alternative energy sources in a bid for greener and cheaper power.
