New corruption cartels emerge in judiciary: CJ

Chief Justice Willy Mutunga has said new corruption cartels have emerged in the judiciary following an increase in its budgetary allocation.
The CJ said on Friday that the cartels have infiltrated the administrative cadres of the judiciary.
He hinted that he will soon take bold steps to deal with the cartels the judiciary administration cadres.
“ I know the ambition of ridding the judiciary of corruption is attainable …….I am already in contact with the Chairman of the Ethics and Anti- Corruption Commission inviting him to take action that would reclaim judiciary from new corruption cartels emerging in the administrative cadres,” he said.
He said confronting resurgent corruption in the judiciary could create turmoil but it was a mark of true professionals to stand for what is right.
The CJ was speaking during the launch of the Advocates Disciplinary Tribunal at Kenyatta International Conference Centre in Nairobi.
His remarks come at a time when Chief Registrar Gladys Shollei is facing the Judicial Service Commission over allegations of impropriety.
Mrs Shollei has denied any role in the loss of Sh1.2 billion in the judiciary.
The JSC had asked Mrs Shollei, who is the accounting officer of the Judiciary, to answer to allegations of impropriety in finance, procurement, human resource and insubordination.
