Kikwete advises Coast to reserve area for construction of industries

President Jakaya Kikwete
President Jakaya Kikwete has called upon Kibaha regional authorities to set aside industrial areas since the existing ones in Dar es Salaam Region have been fully occupied.

The President was speaking when he met with regional and district leaders shortly before he laid the foundation stone for Biolarvicide plant here on Tuesday.

He told government leaders in the region to set aside enough industrial areas to accommodate investors since industrial areas in Dar es Salaam are circulated.

“We need more investors but the industrial areas are concentrated in Dar es Salaam where Kibaha is not very far from. All what you need to do is to set aside land for construction of industries. Investors shall surely direct their investments here,” Kikwete advised.

The President who was on his fifth leg inspection of development projects in Coast Region, on Tuesday laid the foundation stone for the plant in an effort to curb malaria.

The Kibaha based factory estimated to cost USS$22m will produce at least 6 million mosquito pesticides that to be sprayed on mosquito breeding areas.

“We are now going to get rid of this problem (spread of malaria) by killing the larvae with this technology. The National Development Corporation was in the forefront to ensure that the technology is brought from Cuba for the purpose of saving the lives of the people” he said. “Congratulations the NDC and thanks to the Government of Cuba for accepting to avail the technology,” said the President after laying the foundation stone.

Malaria is the leading killer diseases in the world and in the country. Before this new way of spraying mosquito pesticides to larva was brought, Tanzania was mainly relying on anti-malaria drugs and mosquito nets to combat the disease,
At least 23 million nets were distributed to homes countrywide to ensure that the disease is fought on multi pronged ways.

President Kikwete expressed satisfaction that the previous methods have to a larger extent reduced the number of deaths caused by malaria and malaria cases at large.

The Cuban government allowed the neo technology in the fight of the disease to be used in the country following President Kikwete’s visit to the Caribbean country in 2009 where he also toured LabioFarm - the factory that owns the technology.

Apart from producing six million litres of the pesticides for mosquito larva fight, the NDC owned factory will also manufacture natural fertilisers, human and animal vaccines and other pesticides to be sold internally and for export purposes.

It is also expected to employ at least 170 people upon completion.
According to the President, the factory employs modern technology – and is therefore regarded as a green company.
