Finally, Conjestina leaves hospital after funds drive

The family of former World Boxing Super middleweight champion, Conjestina Achieng, was relieved on Saturday after a funds drive to offset a hospital bill was successful.

The fundraising realised Sh785,000 while the hospital bill was Sh595,000. Nairobi Governor Dr Evans Kidero sent his contribution of Sh100,000.

Conjestina, who has been in a Kisumu hospital for the past one and a half months, said she has not retired from boxing and that she is looking forward to get back to the ring.

“I’m not going to give up on my call that God gave me, I will hit the gym immediately to ensure I regain fitness,” said Conjestina. She called on the government to accord her the support to get back to boxing.

A jovial Conjestina, carrying all her titles, thanked well-wishers who came to her rescue to see to it that the hospital bill was settled.

“Had it not been for Reverend Kenneth Wachianga of Maseno Diocese initiative and other well-wishers to have the fund raising, I don’t know how the bills could have been settled but we thank God for everything,” she said.

Conjestina urged everyone to stay by her side to give her the morale support she needs so that she does not get lonely and stressed. “My problem started as a result of stress and feeling lonely but with people around me, I’ll not have anything disturbing me,” she said.

Speaking to Sunday Nation Sport, Rev Wachianga said Conjestina needs to be empowered and that they would try to get her insurance medical cover to facilitate her medical.

Clement Adala, Conjestina’s father, was grateful to everyone who came to help his daughter. “I’m very grateful to everyone who gave us the support be it financially or spiritually, to see my daughter get discharged from the hospital,” said Adala.

“We are looking for ways to ensure that Conjestina does not get back to the state she was in by getting her medical insurance cover.”
