NEW YORK,
Staff
in a New York lingerie shop stopped a teenage girl Thursday on
suspicion of shoplifting and made a horrifying discovery of a dead
foetus in her bag.
Police said they were called to the Herald Square branch of lingerie chain Victoria's Secret at lunchtime after the grim discovery was made.
Two 17-year-old
girls were pulled aside on suspicion of stuffing lacy underwear into
their bags without paying, a police spokesman told AFP.
After searching the belongings of one girl, Victoria's Secret staff found a foetus, the spokesman added.
Police said it was not yet clear whether the foetus had been born alive or dead, nor at how many weeks.
"A medical examiner will determine that tomorrow," the spokesman said.
The girl was taken to nearby Bellevue Hospital and police questioned her friend.
According to US media reports, the girl gave birth to a boy Wednesday.
Victoria's Secret, the largest lingerie retailer in the US, is famous for its bombshell catwalk models.
