The Narok County Government has threatened to
stop this year’s Maasai Mara Marathon, accusing main sponsors Kenya
Airways of hijacking its brand.
County executive committee member in charge of Tourism, Wildlife and Trade Allan Twala
Thursday said their lawyers had been instructed to issue a notice stopping the event, which is scheduled for Saturday.
The national airline has been sponsoring the event for the past four years.
The marathon raises funds to assist those living near the Mara ecosystem.
Kenya Airways, according to the county government, should have entered into some agreement with it before adopting the name.
Maasai Mara Game Reserve is home of the famous Big Five animals and is often referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World” because of the spectacular annual wildebeest migration across River Mara.
The wildebeest migration from the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to Maasai Maara attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world.
Mr Twala said as the custodian of the world famous game reserve, they had exclusive right to own the trademark.
“KQ and other sponsors have been using our brand without our permission,” he said at Narok county headquarters.
Mr Twala also said the county wanted to know which community projects were funded with the money raised.
