Detectives are looking for two
Administration Police officers in connection with a break-in at a
Barclays Bank branch in Nairobi at the weekend.
They are suspected to be part of a gang that stole Sh330,000 from the bank’s Kawangware branch.
The gang entered the bank after breaking a back door at around 8.40pm on Saturday, and spent more than eight hours there, while struggling to break a steel safe.
Three suspects, who got themselves drunk, were arrested at the scene while the rest escaped.
“We shall take the three to court and officers are on the ground looking for those who escaped. The investigations are going on quite well,” Nairobi police boss Benson Kibui said.
When the police arrived at the scene at 5am, the thieves had not managed to open the safe.
Among the suspects arrested is a guard hired by Bob Morgan Security firm to keep watch at the premises.
Those who escaped took away Sh330,000 while those arrested were found with coins amounting to about Sh3,000. The suspects were resting in the vehicle as they waited for their accomplices to break the safe.

DRUNK THIEVES
“Fortunately for us, they drunk themselves silly as they waited in a car they intended to use for get away. We found them with bags used by the bank to store coins. The others who were inside noticed police presence and escaped,” said the head of criminal investigations in Dagoretti, Mr Joseph Ondori.
The amount stolen was stored in one of the tills used by tellers and there was more money in the safe that the gang was not able to open.
Police found gas cylinders and welding materials the gang used in an attempt to open safe locks.
Separately, police raided a bar in Nairobi’s Lunga Lunga area and seized an M-16 rifle.
Mr Kibui said they were looking for the owner of the bar.
“Officers from the nearby Administration Police camp received information that led them to the bar at about 2am. The owner was not there. The officers found the weapon and other items in the store,” he said.
