More than 600 former unionisable workers of the Pyrethrum Board of Kenya are demanding Sh110 million in pension arrears.

The pensioners said they were undergoing extreme social and financial distress due to lack of  money to sustain themselves and their families and called for urgent release of the money.

“Our children have not been  going to school because we do not have money to pay fees. Besides, we are in our sunset years and need constant medical attention which we cannot access,” said the group’s chairman Haron Tinga.

The retirees and retrenchees of 2009 served Nakuru County Governor Kinuthia Mbugua with a memorandum on Wednesday which was received by  the county’s transitional co-ordinator Sammy Kagiri.

Pension arrears
According to their leaders, PBK owes the retirees Sh70 million which has accrued for 23 months beginning November 2011 while the retrenchees are yet to be paid Sh40 million pension arrears.

“The 2009 retrenchees have suffered over the years following failure to pay the money awarded by court on September 26, 2011. They were only paid Sh50 million in December 2010 and that was it. The money has earned interest and we are demanding Sh40 million. The retirees are waiting in pain for Sh70 million,” said Mr Tinga.

But Mr Kagiri said Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Felix Koskei was aware of their concerns through a report compiled by a task force which had been appointed by the governor to evaluate the status of PBK.
“The governor sympathises with you and is willing to help you but be aware that this matter is in the hands of the Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and I know he has the willingness and the power to address your concerns,” said Mr Kagiri.
