Former council workers Wednesday barricaded a county government office with a tractor.
The workers of the former Nyeri Municipal Council are demanding Sh90 million pay arrears.
They downed their tools this week, and are bitter
with the office of the governor for failure to engage them in dialogue
over the matter before they can resume their duties.
“We are blocking the entrance through this gate to
demand what is rightfully ours,” said Ms Jane Wanjiru Maina, who has
worked with the council for 27 years.
Ms Maina took a swipe at the Nyeri police boss who
had sent police officers at the county council offices, arguing that
they were neither demonstrating nor destroying any property but simply
sitting in.
She said they were asking for money they worked for. “We want to be paid so that we go back to our offices and work stations.”
Former vice-chairman of the County Government
Workers’ Union Duncan Ndung’u Kariuki said that before the strike, they
had written an official letter asking for their pay which was not
responded to.
“We want negotiations,” said Mr Kariuki.
According to a letter addressed to the County
Workers and County Government Workers Union and signed by the interim
county secretary, Mrs Margaret Gitiiya, all the workers were required to
resume their duties immediately or they would be disciplined.
