A move to do away with bank cashiers took a first step on Thursday with the introduction of an unmanned digital branch by Standard Chartered Bank.

Fitted with an improved version of the traditional Automated Teller Machines, customers visiting the StanChart’s Junction branch will conduct all banking transactions without the assistance of tellers.

The SelfServ range of ATMs will enable customers to deposit cash and cheques directly, pay bills, transact foreign exchange and mobile banking.

“We are offering our customers hustle-free banking with no tellers other than the ATMs,” said the bank’s acting head of consumer banking Bhartesh Shah during the launch on Thursday.

Known as ‘Breeze@Junction’, the StanChart’s electronic banking has 17-inch touch screens for cash and telegraphic transfers, an interactive self-service bar fitted with iPads for clients to meet, check mail or chat.
This is the first for the bank in the region and, according to Mr Shah, it will take at least two years for their 38 branches in the country to be fully digitised.

Mr Edward Ndichu, the regional head of digital banking, says the bank has addressed possible security fraud that may affect online transactions.
