Dar es Salaam. Parliamentary Committee for Public Organisations Accounts (POAC), yesterday failed to go through the accounts of Government Employees Provident Fund (GEPF) after its chairperson failed to appear in the session.

According to deputy chairperson of the POAC, Mr Deo Filikunjombe, they sent away the GEPF officials who reported to the committee for the accounts evaluation.
“We had to send them away because we couldn’t meet with them while the chairperson was not present,” Mr Filikunjombe said.

As the parliamentary committee was scheduled to start yesterday, the POAC was supposed to meet with GEPF, chairperson Ms Joyce Shahidi, did not show up without any prior information. The committee, therefore, directed the GEPF officials, who entered POAC room for the meeting, to go back and ask Ms Shahidi to officially write an excuse over her absence.

He said once the committee receives the letter, it would set another date for meeting with the GEPF. Following that incident, Mr Filikunjombe told the GEPF to be serious in their activities since the fund was very crucial and there were  gvernment retirees, particularly in the Prison Department and Police Force, who were complaining  over delays in being paid their benefits. However, reached for comment, the GEPF director of marketing and operations, Mr Anselim Peter, refuted the claims.

He said they were paying their clients on time as required by their customer service contracts they signed in 2007. “We pay benefits to our customers within seven days, actually, the GPEF is one of the Pension Funds that pay benefits early,” he said.
