ADDIS ABABA, Wednesday
Kenya and Ghana have have formed a partnership that will boost economic growth and technical cooperation.
The
deal will encourage cooperation in trade and investment, energy and
mineral resources, agriculture and livestock development.
Foreign
Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed said the agreement would lay
the foundation for Kenya and Ghana to cooperate in areas that will
improve the lives of the citizens of the two countries.
The
minister noted that the potential for trade between the two countries
is enormous and disclosed that Kenya will open a high commission in the
West African nation within the first half of the year.
“It
is a pity that the agreements were not signed earlier although Kenya
and Ghana’s relationship goes back a long time in history. I am,
however, pleased that these agreements are signed during my time in
office,” she said.
AU SUMMIT
Amb
Mohamed and her counterpart Hanna Serwaah Tetteh signed the agreement
at the Kenyan Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on Wednesday.
Ms
Tetteh would pave the way for closer working relations. She cited the
Information Technology sector as one of the areas that can be greatly
exploited.
“There is so much that the people of our two
nations can share to improve their living standards,” the Ghanaian
Foreign Minister said.
A team is to be formed composed
of ministers and experts from various sectors that include education,
health, tourism and culture, science and technology, security and
military cooperation, foreign affairs, legal and judicial matters.
The two ministers also signed a Memorandum of Understanding on political consultations.
The
two leaders are in Addis Ababa for the African Union Ministerial
meeting ahead of the 22nd Ordinary Summit of the AU Heads of State and
Government which opens on Thursday.
President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to arrive in Addis Ababa later in the day for the summit.
