Food sufficiency tops agenda as Bashe tables 1.25tri/-spending plan

DODOMA: Minister for Agriculture, Mr. Hussein Bashe, has tabled a budget proposal of 1.248tri/- for the 2024/25 financial year pending approval by parliamentarians.

He stated that his plan prioritizes food security in the country.

Tabling the proposal to lawmakers in Dodoma on Thursday, Mr. Bashe noted that in the 2022/23 financial year, the country met its food needs for the agricultural season.

In the 2023/24 period, he added, the Ministry managed to secure a total of 16.4 million tonnes, with an additional 4 million tonnes recorded as surplus.

Regarding these figures, he stated that the country is 124 percent self-sufficient.

He further outlined that the country aims to achieve 130 percent food sufficiency by 2025.

Additionally, the minister mentioned that his department plans to boost crop exports to 3 billion US dollars.

According to the Minister, the agricultural sector grew by 4.2 percent in 2023, compared to the 3.3 percent recorded in 2022.
He added that it contributed 26.5 percent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), up from 26.2 percent in 2022.

Furthermore, he highlighted that the sector has provided employment to locals at an average rate of 65.6 percent and contributed 65 percent of industrial raw materials.
