President Samia hails Sokoine's vision, sparks education revolution

PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has hailed the visionary ideas of former Prime Minister Edward Sokoine, affirming that they have sparked a revolution in the

education sector.

She made the statement today in Arusha as she led Tanzanians and other delegates at special national prayers to commemorate 40 years of his passing.

President Samia said the former Prime Minister, who was also a legislator for Monduli constituency, valued education and believed that intellectuals were key people who were supposed to lead debates and see ways on how to a country can spur its economic development. 

“He insisted on how intellectuals can apply their knowledge to shape and protect social standards and values. He also aimed at ensuring that intellectual ideas reach policy makers, political parties and the government at large,” she said.

“Good thing is that we take into consideration every aspect raised upon be it television, or radios that intellectuals discuss as they represent other people in the country,” she added.

Furthermore, she recalled his poignant remarks emphasizing that education in rural areas should elevate civilization, preventing complacency with impoverished conditions.

“He stressed on vocational training and understanding community environment so that people aware of their status. I am delighted to say that we have taken a milestone by adhering to his thoughts,” she said.

According to her, one of the education reforms is putting emphasis on vocational education so that graduates are in a position to contribute to the community and utilize the available opportunities as they outgrow the economy and bringing about economic evolution.

President Samia added that the government had also invested over 7 billion/- for school feeding programs in the Monduli District.
As for the water problems affecting the district, the government is pumping 27 billion/- for the ongoing projects aimed at supplying water from Arusha City to a total of 17 villages in Monduli.

The son of the late Premier, Ambassador Joseph Sokoine appealed to the President to re-construct and upgrade the large water well which Sokoined had dug in the seventies to trap rain water for flood control as well as serving as watering trough for local livestock.
Former Prime Minister Edward Moringe Sokoine tragically lost his life in a road accident around this time in 1984.

Every ten year the government organizes a special celebration to celebrate the life of the patriotic leader.
