20 online ride-hailing companies apply for LATRA licences

PWANI: LAND Transport Regulatory Authority (LATRA) has said about 20 online ride-hailing companies have submitted licence application documents seeking to

operate ride-hailing business in the country.

The LATRA Director General, Habibu Suluo said in Kibaha, Coast Region as of Tuesday this week, the number increased to 20 from only two companies when the business was first introduced into the country in 2017.

“Online ride-hailing business has continued to grow rapidly due to the existence of friendly commercial environment in the country,” he said.

Adding: “The application submitted by the 20 ride-hailing operators has met the legal requirements.”

He further noted out of 20 companies that applied, 19 have paid the licence fees and been issued the licences, except one company that has not paid the licence fee.

LATRA boss said so far the authority has issued a total of 13,721 licences to online taxis and motorcycles.

“These licences issued are of one year period…in 2021/22- a total of 3,144 licences were issued while in 2022/23 – 3,598 licences and 2023/24 – 6,979 licences,” he asserted.

According to the authority, in ride-hailing services three groups are regulated including the owner of the system (company), the car or motorcycle owner (driver) and the passenger (fare)
