Smart Technologies On The Rise As Connected Devices Hit One Million

The use of smart technologies and devices in the country has reached a new milestone as the number of connected devices hit the one million mark.

According to the latest data from the Communication Authority of Kenya (CAK), the number of machine to machine mobile-network subscriptions increased by 13.8 per cent in the quarter ended December 2021 to 1.1 million from 988,184 in September.

The CA describes the subscriptions as the number of mobile-cellular machine to machine subscriptions that are assigned for use in machines and devices for the exchange of data between networked devices.

The devices range from cars, smart meters and consumer electronics.

In the bigger picture machine to machine connections define technology that enables networked devices to exchange information and perform actions without the manual assistance of humans.

Such connectivity is closely tied to artificial intelligence and machine learning which allows devices to make their own autonomous choices such as an automatic vending machine restocking itself.

Machine to machine connectivity is also seen as the foundation to the internet of things which describes a system of inter-related computing, mechanical and/or digital machines.

Such connectivities now have household utilities with devices such as lights, air conditioning and refrigerators now connected to the internet.

The internet of things is tipped to find further footing from the rollout of 5G connectivity.
