Speaking at the official launch of the seminars, TFDA acting ManagingDirector (MD) Agness Kijo said besides the legal compliance, participants will be equipped with additional skills on management of food safety and hygiene.
The operation, according to Ms Kijo, will be conducted by TFDA in collaboration with Regional and Local Government Authorities through health officers in the respective areas. TFDA data indicate that there are 637 registered Mass Food Service Providers, with 37 per cent of them based in Dar es Salaam.
However, the number remains small compared to people who are so far providing the services, Ms Kijo charged. Through the seminar, the MD is optimistic that many service providers will register with the regulator, saying some of them could have been unaware of the law.
“We will take them through the procedures that they need to follow to have their business legally recognised through registration,” she said, adding that the seminars will be provided to all zones in the country and ultimately both TFDA and stakeholders in the sector will agree on the grace period to meet all the required improvements and address the anomalies prior to the effective crackdown on the disobedient.
“Mass food catering laws will be highly highlighted to remind participants of their obligations…participants will have enough time for dialogue and at the end, we will come up with resolutions and deliberations that will help in boosting the country’s economy as well.
We intend to offer reasonable grace period to the businesspeople, after which we will launch our operation against disobeying service providers,’’ she charged.
According to the World Health Organisation statistics released in 2015, about 600 million people globally are suffering from diseases related to consumption of unsafe food, with 420 of them dying as a result. In Africa, it is estimated that 91 million people suffer from unsafe food consumption diseases, with 137 of the victims dying.
