Minister raises concern over environmental crisis

ANNE ROBI
GOVERNMENT has declared environmental degradation as big threat to the country, calling for concerted efforts to fight the problem.

In line with that, government plans to announce Lake Rukwa and parts of Mbeya mountain range as environment- sensitive areas in efforts to ensure full protection from destruction.
Minister in the Vice-President’s office (Union Affairs and Environment), January Makamba, said this in Dar es Salaam yesterday when speaking to editors and reporters on his 16-day tour of 10 regions.
He cautioned of loss of natural resources, including water sources, wildlife and forests if the situation persists. “Many parts of the country are facing a serious depletion of resources as the destruction is likely to send the country into shocking hunger and poverty crisis,” he said.
He said that many places that he visited have seriously been hit by environmental degradation as animals such as cows are visibly seen eating sand while hippos die of water shortage
