Regional off-grid connections boosted

THE German’s solar solutions provider - Mobisol has installed over 50,000 solar home and business systems to mostly low-income earners in off-grid locations in three East African countries of Tanzania, Rwanda and Kenya.

Mobisol Tanzania Marketing Manager, Allan Rwechungura said in Dar es Salaam on Saturday that in addition to the solar systems, buyers could also acquire other solar-powered appliances that can be an important source of income.
The availability of the appliances like haircutters and strengtheners, music systems, irons, fans and business solutions such as multiple phone chargers, could help create jobs to majority for unemployed youth in the rural areas.
Similarly, he said one of the company’s objectives is to enable children in the off grid areas where there is no power to have light and access to information via radio, TV and internet that empowers them to increase their educational opportunities.
“We also focus on conserving the environment while, at the same time, the electricity we provide offers an opportunity for people to utilise it for various income generating activities which improve their economic well-being,” he said.
Also, in a ‘rent-to-own’ model, Mobisol provides customers with solar home systems making monthly payments via mobile money in three years period. Customers can pay 999/- per day to own solar power system at their homes, enjoying full service and after sales warranty.
The system sizes offered start at 80Watts, which is bigger than most other household oriented solar home systems in the region and goes as higher as 120W to 200W. “Mobisol offers electrification solutions to people who can’t just go to a shop and buy an 800 US dollars solar system, but can pay in small installments,” he said.
Mr Rwechungura said that Mobisol for the first time will participate in the Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair, scheduled to start this week
