THE Ministry of Works, Transport and Communication will contract and improve road infrastructure to ensure they are in better shape all the time.
The remarks were made here yesterday by
the Deputy Minister of Works, Transport and Communication, Eng Edwin
Ngonyani, when responding to questions from lawmakers. Dr Raphael
Chegeni (Busega – CCM) wanted to know how much the government has set
aside for road infrastructure in Busega district.
In response, Eng Ngonyani stressed that
the 5th phase government intends to lay tarmac and improve all roads
network in the country. He directed Road Board and Tanzania Roads Agency
(Tanroads) to ensure when identifying roads for upgrading, to
prioritize areas with the most urgent need.
“It is the responsibility of the Roads
board and Tanroads to ensure they prioritize areas with the most urgent
needs, because the 5th phase government’s objective is to improve all
road networks in the country,” he explained.
He acknowledged that in the 2014/15
financial year, funds from the road fund were not satisfactory due to
low revenue collection from different sources of the fund.
He however assured the legislators that
this financial year the situation has changed and by March this year,
462.78bn/- out of 866.63bn/- had been received by the board of directors
of the road fund and channelled to Tanroads.
“We expect by June this year, all the
remaining fund would have been released for the purpose of
rehabilitating and constructing of roads in the 2015/16 budget,” he
noted. Eng Ngonyani noted that in the financial year 2015/16 Busega
district was allocated 570.38m/- and by March a total of 432.63m/- had
been released which is 75.9 per cent.
