POLICE in Dar es Salaam are holding 96 youth for their alleged involvement in break-in and theft incidents at night.
Special Dar es Salaam Zonal Police
Commander, Mr Simon Sirro, said the suspects were arrested recently in
various parts of the city, thanks to the crackdown mounted by his force
to weed out to crime in the commercial capital.
He said the suspects have confessed
involvement in various incidents such as breaking and entering into
people’s houses; carting away properties such as radio and TV sets in
the process.
The zonal police chief noted that the
suspects operated in a similar fashion in which they form groups of 20
people, 10 of whom break into residences while the other ten remain
outside.
According to Mr Sirro, the suspects were
arrested at Ukonga, Kijitonyama, Magomeni and Oysterbay. They will
appear before the court after completion of investigations as the
crackdown continues to nab others.
He mentioned the names of five out of 96
suspects as Jaribuni Ally (18), Bakari Mohamed (15), Hamisi Issa (18),
Marry Abdallah (19) and Jumanne Said (16). They were all arrested in
different areas of Temeke Municipality.
In another incident, police are holding
15 suspected bandits, including 13 who are suspected to have conspired
to raid Access Bank at Mbagala in the municipality on February 26.
The other two suspects out of 15,
identified as Samir Yakubu (42) and Hamad Mwinyijuma (29), are being
held on suspicion of tying security guards with a rope before stealing
from various shops in Kariakoo.
He said the two were arrested last week
as they were about to steal from the shop of a businessman, Mr Mufardal
Muhawali (52), along Swahili Street in the area. “The suspects, who were
more than two, managed to steal 105,000/-, golden rings, earrings and
necklaces.
They fled with the items,” said Mr
Sirro. Meanwhile, a police report has shown that cases related to child
sexual abuse have scaled up. The Force’s Spokersperson, Ms Advera
Bulimba, said in the city yesterday that about 1,765 cases related to
child rape have been reported between January and March, this year.
Addressing reporters in Dar es Salaam,
Ms Bulimba said that 1,585 cases were reported last year between January
and March. “According to the report, this year’s child rape incidents
have increased. There are 180 more cases compared to last year,” she
told reporters.
The spokesperson said that 823 suspects
were arrested and eventually arraigned over involvement in such acts. Ms
Bulimba noted that the war against child rape was being made difficult
due to poor cooperation from parents and guardians who opt for
out-of-court settlement
