PUBLIC school teachers in Dar es Salaam will from next month be able to commute free of charge following an initiative introduced jointly by Kinondoni authority and the Dar es Salaam Commuter Bus Owners Association (DARCOBOA).
The Kinondoni District Commissioner
(DC), Mr Paul Makonda, said in Dar es Salaam that the move is aimed at
motivating teachers. He says teachers would be required to get special
Identity Cards (IDs) so they benefit from the service.
“Initially, the idea was to introduce
the programme in Kinondoni District only but stakeholders advised that
it be implemented in the entire city of Dar es Salaam,” said the
Kinondoni DC.
Mr Makonda pointed out that the
programme to start on March 7 is aimed at helping the Fifth Phase
Government to improve the education sector, an initiative which the
government has started by scrapping school fees.
“The teachers will benefit from the programme from 5:30 am to 8:00 am and from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm,” he observed.
Mr Makonda said he came up with the idea
after assessing the challenges facing teachers in Dar es Salaam. He
said that their transport problem has become a major challenge in the
city.
“The new programme will help between 10,000 and 15,000 primary and secondary teachers in Dar es Salaam,” he said.
DARCOBOA Chairman, Mr Sabri Mabrouk,
urged drivers and conductors to cooperate while implementing the
programme and he urged teachers to carry with them the special IDs to
avoid embarrassment. “We expect drivers and conductors to support the
programme.
This is part of our support to the fifth phase government in its efforts to improve education sector,” he said.
Mr William Masanja, who is the Chairman
of Association of Transporters in Dar es Salaam (UWADAR), hailed the
initiative. He urged other regions to emulate DC Makonda for creativity.
“We promise to support DC Makonda in implementing the programme,” he
said
