EA Summit preps well underway, Magufuli told

PRESIDENT John Magufuli yesterday met and held talks with the Secretary General of the East African Community (EAC), Dr Richard Sezibera, at the State House in Dar es Salaam.

Among other things, President Magufuli received a report over the preparations of the EAC summit which is due to be held in the 2nd of March in Arusha.
President Magufuli is the current chairman of the EAC, which is made up of five member countries, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda and Kenya.
The EAC secretary general assured President Magufuli that preparations for the meeting were afoot and that everything was moving on smoothly.
He said that among other things, the meeting will discuss a plan to put up automobile factories in the member countries in a bid to reduce importation expenses and that heads of states will launch a joint passport.
Commenting on the status of the community, Dr Sezibera said that various activities have been implemented including the inking of the signing of the protocol for the establishment of the customs union, trade union and single currency.
Others include the discussion over the strengthening of infrastructures such as railways and electricity within the EAC and the discussion over political federation.
Minister for Foreign Affairs, East African, Regional and International Cooperation, Dr Augustine Mahiga, said that, as the host, Tanzania was ready to receive the delegation in the forthcoming summit.
He noted that alongside the summit, presidents of Tanzania and Kenya will launch a road connecting the two countries at Holili in Kilimanjaro Region and put a foundation stone at the one stop boarder post also in Holili.
