In Summary
President Uhuru Kenyatta has travelled to Ethiopia
where he will join other African Heads of State to discuss how to combat
terrorism just weeks after militants attacked a Kenya Defence Forces
camp in El Adde, Somalia, killing an unknown number of soldiers.
Mr Kenyatta will attend a meeting of the African Union (AU)
Peace and Security Council Friday evening where recent security
developments in South Sudan and Somalia will be discussed.
“The meeting will focus on the issue of terrorism
in Africa and review developments in South Sudan and Somalia,” State
House said in a statement.
“It will avail an opportunity for the Heads of
State and Government to reflect on terrorism in Africa, with a view to
enhancing Africa’s efforts against the menace.”
Mr Kenyatta will also participate in the Meeting of
the Committee of Ten (C10) on the United Nations reforms which has for
several years been pushing for Africa to be allocated two permanent
seats in the UN Security Council.
He will also chair the 24th Summit of the Heads of
State and Government participating in the African Peer Review Mechanism
(APRM).
The APRM is a mutually agreed initiative launched
in 2002 to encourage member countries to adhere to political, economic
and corporate governance values.
The initiative has been seen to be faltering with the meeting expected to try and revive its fortunes.
“The President, who is the current Chairman of the
APRM, will lead deliberations at the Summit whose theme is,
‘Revitalizing the APRM to strengthen Governance in Africa,” State House
said.
Mr Kenyatta will on the remaining two days attend
the ordinary session of the Assembly of the African Union discussing
issues including the International Criminal Court, terrorism and human
rights.
