TANZANIA Livestock Research Institute (TALIRI) Mabuki Center in Misungwi District, Mwanza Region has launched an innovational platform for African chickens genetic gain (ACGG) project in four districts of Misungwi and Sengerema in Mwanza, Maswa and Bariadi in Simiyu Region.
The Lake Zone Sub-National Coordinator,
Mr Tawfik Mahamudu, addressing press conference said that the project
worth 4.8m US dollars is implemented in three countries: Tanzania,
Ethiopia and Nigeria its life span is five years.
“I think this project is timely because
the three governments have emphasized on smallholder poultry production
as part of national development plans,” said Mr Mahamudu. He added that
it is the right choice to give people sources of high-value protein such
as eggs and meat and it is assumed that these animal products will
improve nutrition and income in communities.
Mr Mahamudu noted that ACGG is aiming to
implement the genetic gain in four tropically adapted breeds. If the
breeds’ production goes well, the genotype knowledge will be distributed
to many more producers.
This will contribute to improved food
security in the country and will also increase smallholders’ income and
improve their livelihoods for sustainable development, under the funding
of Bill and Melinda Foundation and Tanzania government.
He said that the objective of the
project is to improve local chicken breeds through introduction of
exotic breeds that lay from 170 eggs to 250 eggs per year and fast
growing as compared to local ones that lay from 40 to 70 eggs per one
chicken annually.
