Saudi Arabia offers increased market for honey exports

Bee keepers in Tabora Region have secured a reliable market for honey exports in Saudi Arabia thanks to initiatives taken by the government and private sector to develop the sector.

Speaking to this paper yesterday at the 38th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF), the Marketing Manager of the Tabora Pure Honey Processors, Frederic Daniel, said they have secured reliable market with Saudi Arabia.

“We have an order to export over 1200 litres of honey (worth over USD 20,000) to a company in Saudi Arabia before the end of this year,” he said noting that this is the third time for the company (El Hazood) to put up an order for their honey, and last year they exported 800 litres.

Apart from Saudi Arabia, he said, they have also exported honey to Iran and Oman.

Detailing on their production activities and quality of honey, he said they have trained over 300 beekeepers on quality honey production and that most of the honey from their area is nicotine toxin free.
He noted that honey produced in Tanzania is of high quality and fetches high prices in domestic and global markets.

According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, international markets for honey and beeswax are highly competitive.
A key ingredient in food and medicine, honey is also used in the production of various products such as beer and wine.

Markets for Tanzania honey are mostly in the European Union, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Eastern African region while the markets for beeswax are Japan, US and EU.

Available data show that in 1991 Tanzanian honey and beeswax was highly competitive in terms of quality, winning by 100 per cent the quality test for organic honey in the UK.

It is estimated that the sector generates about USD 1.7 million annually from sales of honey and beeswax in addition to employing about two million rural people.

Ethiopia leads Africa in honey production and is the eighth in the world, producing 39,000 tonnes of honey per year. It is the fourth in beeswax production and sells 4,300 tonnes per year.
