Meagre funds holding back library school

The Tanzania Library Information Service Board (TLSB) says insufficient funds are hampering its efforts to improve infrastructures at the School of Library, Archives and Documentation Studies (SLADS) in Bagamoyo, Coast Region.

TLSB Board Officer, Confort Komba briefing the media on various activities of the Board, said funds issued by the central government to run the institution are not covering the planned activities. He said the board has failed to purchase relevant basic equipments and provide readers with current books and newsletters.

He said they have yet to provide internet services due to shortage of funds to purchase enough computers.

“Many of our customers rely on online sources...I ask the government through the ministry of Education and Vocational Training to allocate sufficient funds for the institution in order to improve services,” he said.

Komba noted that SLADS was established in 1972 and that the enrolment of students has increased to 1,093 from just 30 students in 1972. He attributed the increment to the high demand of librarians in the country.

For his part, Chairman of TLSB Board of Directors, Prof Mathew Luhanga said most of its libraries located in cities provide internet services.

He however said a lot has to be done to ensure that all libraries across the country provide internet services as many users depend on it for information.
In addition Luhanga said they are planning on opening new libraries in different regions in 22 urban centres, 19 districts and 3 divisions.
