Dar es Salaam. Lake Oil Limited has pledged to support efforts of improving maternal health in Dar es Salaam hospitals.

For a start, it yesterday donated various medical kits worth Sh11.355 million to Mwananyamala, Amana and Temeke hospitals.

The firm said it sought to play an increasingly important role in alleviating problems facing the city’s medical centres.

The majority of city residents depend on the three hospitals which have been facing the shortage of kits and other items, according to a representative of the the Dar es Salaam regional medical officer, Dr Ackim Mwaikasu.

“This is why we find this help timely….we thank Lake Oil for the assistance and request other corporate bodies to emulate it,” said Dr Mwaikasu while receiving the donations on behalf of the three medical centres at Mwananyamala Hospital.

Lake Oil country manager Khaled Mohamed said the donations were aimed at reducing the number of maternal and other deaths at the hospitals.

“We have come to realise that we sometimes lose lives that can be easily avoided....as a company, we work with people and so we believe we have a role to play in alleviating the predicaments facing communities around us,” he said.

This, according to Mr Mohamed, is in line with the company’s mission which requires Lake Oil to give back to communities in which it serves.

He said Mwananyamala, Amana and Temeke hospitals were specifically chosen after a thorough analysis of the growing number of people who depend on the medical facilities for their health needs.
“It is an open secret that a majority of city residents are served by municipal hospitals...this is why we decided to channel our assistance there,” he said.

Lake Oil Limited was registered in the year 2005 and commenced its operations in March 2006 in Dar es Salaam just as an Oil Marketing Company but has grown rapidly during past years. Currently, it has a total of 73 retail outlets countrywide.
The items donated included three delivery kits and thirty-one wheel chairs. Lake Oil also donated 15 stretchers for delivery purposes, five BP machines and two examination lumps.
