The government has confirmed Lucy Mbugua as the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) managing director.

Transport Secretary Michael Kamau confirmed the appointment Friday following recommendations from the KAA board.

Ms Mbugua will run Kenya’s airports for three years after serving in an acting capacity since August last year when Mr Stephen Gichuki proceeded on terminal leave pending expiry of his term in October the same year.

KAA board chairman Mutuma Mugambi said Ms Mbugua was the best of more than 50 candidates who were interviewed.

Ms Mbugua had been the Authority’s General Manager for Marketing and Business Development for eight years.

She was appointed acting chief when a fire had just gutted the international arrivals terminal at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport amid a tussle with businessman Kamlesh Pattni over the Kenya duty free shops.

Ms Mbugua takes over as expansion and modernisation works at JKIA gather steam starting with the rebuilding of the burnt terminal, the set up of a temporary airport and the construction of a fresh terminal for Sh55 billion.
